The U.S. embassy has taken my passport to stamp the visa on. I don’t have a driver’s license and Japan doesn’t have a decent ID system as Western countries do. So offically my ID is null now. There’s nothing that proves my identity, at least for a week.

Well, it doesn’t mean anything in Japan, though. You can safely buy anything with credit cards and drink alcohol without ID.
