Miles usage strategy

January 15, 2007

Here’re some facts.

  • I have 26,000 miles in my ANA mileage card- I have 11,000 miles in my SMBC card which could be converted to ANA mileage (with 2,000 yen charge. Yikes)- I’ll get 5,000 bonus miles from ANA card USA initial creation- Spending $1 gives me 1 mile using ANA card USA every monthand I have a following flights plan:

  • SFO JFK sometime in March … to invite and guide my parents around U.S.- SFO -> NRT around 4/1 as Premium Economy (which is like United’s Economy Plus, with universal power)- NRT TPE (Taipei) to visit Taiwan on the 2nd week of April (Undecided)- NRT -> SFO flight after thatand here’s how much you need to spend how.

  • Upgrading SFO - NRT to Business class requires 25,000 miles (one way)- Upgrading NRT - TPE to Business class requires 12,000 miles (one way)- Free NRT TPE flight requires 20,000 miles for Economy, 40,000 miles for Business- (Free NRT SFO flight requires 50,000 miles for Economy, 80,000 miles for Business)I need to do some math to use the miles effectively… I’m thinking of:

  • not upgrading SFO -> NRT on April- will upgrade one way (or round-trip) of NRT - TPE to Business (12,000 or 24,000)- will upgrade NRT -> SFO on April to Business (25,000)and to do that I’ll need more 6,000 miles but it could be doable with SFO JFK, or by ANA Card usage. Better suggestions?
