DLP vs. Plasma

February 18, 2007

I’ve been studying, comparing and looking at (in Circuit City, Costco and Best Buy) a lot about the TV monitor to put in my room. The wall to wall is 15 feet and I think 50 inch or 56 inch is the best size for it.

DLP pros: reasonably cheap for a large size. 1080p available. Good for gaming and PC output DLP cons: Narrow viewable area (Need to sit straight front), Gigantic (No stylish)

Plasma pros: beautiful screen. Wide viewable area. Flat and doesn’t take that much space (depth). Plasma cons: More expensive if bigger than 42”. 1080p is not available (Some models accept it). No good for gaming.

My sources for the monitors will be: DVD and ripped DivX/Xvid files (~720x 480), Location Free TV (320x240) and p2p football programs (i don’t know the resolution but they’re very small). I’ll probably buy either Wii or Xbox 360 for gaming if I have a spare time, but won’t play that much. I might subscribe to DirecTV or Comcast for some HD programming if they’re available < $60/month.

So, I don’t stick with 1080p at this moment, but having a future compatibility is good. Apparently leaders in this indusry are Panasonic (Plasma), SHARP (LCD), Samsung (Plasma/DLP) and Toshiba (DLP). Samsung’s DLP is black and the rear design is made very sharp so that you don’t feel that deep, by the look of it.

Currently thinking of Samsung Plasma 50” ($1600), Panasonic Plasma 50” ($2000), Samsung DLP 56” ($1400) and Toshiba DLP 56” ($1200). Not easy to decide!
