PS3 or Xbox 360
Current Situation:
-
I have lots of Japanese PS2 games, some of which I’d like to play again- I’m not game addicted that much, but occasionally want to play some popular games like Final Fantasy, Dragon Warriors etc.- I have lots of Japanese DVD disks, region-2 coded.- I have Mac mini to play videos and music. No need for another media center solution.- Don’t know if I can turn Mac mini to region-free. Rumors say I can disable DVD auto-play and use VLC to mount VOB files directly.- Mac mini allows me to change the region code for its DVD drive upto 5 times or something.- I have PSP- I’m usually ok with the standard DVD quality when I watch movies at home, but would love to buy HD-DVD or BD if I really like it. Maybe a couple of them an year.Assumpitions:
-
No Japanese PS2 Games on US PS3, since they are region-coded- Playing Japanese PS3 Games on US PS3 is fine since they’re in the same code- same for Blur-ray Disk (BD) since US/JP are in the same codeSo my current choices are PS3 and Xbox 360. No Wii at this moment sir. Wii is for a party and my home is not for that.
Xbox 360:
-
Good amount of game lineups. (+)- Some games have region codes while others are not. (-)- Upscales DVD to 1080p (+)- extra HD-DVD drive with $200 - It has a media solution if I have a Vista PC, which I don’t have nor need- region 2 standard DVD not playable (-)**PS3: **
-
Good amount of game lineups. Less than Xbox360 at this moment but will grow (+)- Promising big titles like FF, DW (+)- Upscales DVD to 1080p (+)- Built-in BD (+)- PSP integration to some extent. I’m not sure what I can do with it though.- DLNA support to make it a media center, again which I don’t need- Japanese PS3 games playable (+)- Japanese PS2 games NOT playable (-)- region 2 standard DVD not playable (-)So clearly PS3 wins. The only downside is the region code about PS2 games and standard DVD. Then I came up with another idea:
PS3 (buy in Japan and bring/ship):
- Japanese PS2 games playable! (+)- region 2 standard DVD playable (+)- US standard DVD not playeble (but I have Mac mini to play that)- US PS2 games not playable (but who cares?)So it looks like a brilliant idea. Wondering how and if it’s possible at all.
