Uncertainty about how many days are okay to take time off can also stir inequality. It can turn into a privilege for some people who may be more aggressive in taking vacations compared to people who feel like their work and their appreciation at work would suffer from being away for too long. This is precisely what I was worried when a few of my former employers tried to implement this kind of vacation policy. I left the company soon after they implemented it, but I hear similar stories where a few employees just could not reach to an agreement with their manager on when and how often to take vacation because of this unclear rule.

We talked about this a bit (in Japanese) on episode 62 aftershow of Rebuild with Dice who works for GitHub.
