Setting up Vista WiFi over IM: yak shaving

My girlfriend got a new Vista PC, pretty good one from SONY and was trying to setup WiFi with her router, got no luck and I’ve been trying to guide her to set it up over the instant messenger. It’s nothing but a yak shaving. The PC doesn’t have WiFi client, so we bought a pretty cheap $10 USB wifi adapter from PCI. The CD ROM comes with Vista driver but the setup instruction was old and incorrect. We figured out how to install it manually by looking at their FAQ site. Done.- Tried to connect to the existent wifi router but she couldn’t find how to. Yeah, it’s Windows, so it needed a reboot to enable the Wi-Fi client capability.- Now she’s asked for a WEP password which she doesn’t remember. Let the fun begin.- Tried to connect another router with 802.11g to set up. She only has one ethernet cable, so I told her to turn it on but not connect the cable yet.- The PC is now on wireless with the default SSID and no password. The router’s admin screen is 192.168.0.1, she opened it and tried the default password but it wasn’t accepted.- We thought it’s an IE stupid security thing and tried Firefox, no luck.- We tried resetting the router a couple of times, and tried other possible default passwords. Still no luck.- It turned out 192.168.0.1 is the IP of ADSL modem. Gosh.- I told her to unplug the ethernet and try the same IP. Now we can get the login screen but as soon as she typed the password the wireless goes down.- We now tried the ethernet option. Plug the PC LAN and router LAN port and access 192.168.0.1 on the browser. No response.- By the command prompt and fabulous ipconfig command we figured out its network has changed to 192.168.1.. Now she opened the 192.168.1.1 and successfully changed its internal IP range to 192.168.254.- Changed the security setting which is SSID:default and no password to a bit more secure WPA(PSK)/TKIP. Was (surprisingly) successful.- Now unplug the ethernet cable from the PC and connected to router WAN. - woohoo! now she’s online via WiFi.It took like 3 hours to setup all of this, and that’s why suggesting a new computer is the best way for geeks to get close to the girls “Hi, could you set this up for me?” “Sure thing, may I come to your place tonight?”

Did you see that ludicrous display last night?

It was tough watching The IT Crowd S02E02 on my flight while everyone else was asleep, because it was hard for me to keep from laughing out. I especially liked the first few minutes where Moss found the very useful bluffball.co.uk (grr it doesn’t really exist!) and Jen had a date with Michael who looks like a magician.

Hearts Canon SD 880

If you follow me on Flickr you might’ve noticed that the amount of pictures I upload to Flickr has increased dramatically recently. It’s not just because I’m back home in Japan but also I got a new camera Canon SD880 (or IXY 920 is in Japan) and it works really well.

Electronica as a commercialized music

Due to the big success of Perfume (they got Oricon #1 for their album and did two concerts in a row in Budokan) and probably capsule, Electronica is now officially becoming the mainstream of Japanese pop music. Aira Mitsuki is probably the most commercialized type of music so far as I’ve found. Female voice (synthesized with Auto-Tune), four to the floor, 8-bit sounds and lyrics saying “I am robot”. How typical! I like the music but I’m afraid we will see more like this coming, probably too much so that we’ll get bored soon. 01 ロボットハニー05 ロボットハニー (Sound Around rmx)

Japanese laws around Prostitution

One day I tweeted about Proposition K and at first i thought it was little scary, but many people told me that it’s a good thing to protect women in the business and reduce crimes on top of the prostitution and now I agree to that. Yesterday I found a very interesting 2ch thread titled “Why isn’t porn video considered as a prostitution?” and it has a very interesting summary for the definition of prostitution and sex with minors in Japan. Here’s what you do and whether it’s criminal. Having sex with 13 or younger: CRIMINAL (even upon agreement)- Having sex with 13-17: CRIMINAL (unless you’re married to each other, or in Nagano prefecture, or you’re also younger than 18)- Having sex with 18 or older: OK (obviously)- Paying for prostitute 18 or older: OK- Paying for prostitute younger than 18: CRIMINAL (child porn law. 18 year old high school girl = OK)- Prostituting by being asked if you’re 18 or older: OK- Prostituting by being asked if you’re younger than 18: OK (you’re considered as a victim of child porn - Asking someone 18 or older for prostitution: OK- Asking someone younger than 18 for prostitution: OK (CRIMINAL in some prefectures)- Pimping yourself: CRIMINAL independent of your age- Pimping someone: CRIMINAL independent of prostitute’s age- Soliciting someone 18 or older for free sex: OK- Soliciting someone younger than 18 for free sex: CRIMINAL (child porn law)Pretty interesting huh? I find it a little unfair that paying for prostitution is not criminal while trying to prostitute yourself is. So I guess all prostitution should happen in the form of the buyer first asking the prostitute and shouldn’t be the other way round. Also there’s a chance that you having a sex with younger than 18 and could claim “Oh I just thought she’s 18”. Hmm.

Girly speak + Takahashi Method = awesome Keitai Novel

The brand-new Keitai Novel ”Atashi Kanojo (= I’m your GF)” got the Keitai Novel Award 2008 and has the new style: Girly speak with few-words at a line, just like Takahashi Method as seen in tech presentations. It goes like this: My Name.
