2 ways to watch DVR recorded programs over the net
Currently I’m using Location Free TV and its Windows client to connect to the base station in my apartment in Tokyo. This works great but sometimes I feel the latency annoying.
Apparently another way to watch these programs is via DLNA server functionality built-in for my DVR (Toshiba’s RD-XD92D) to copy or stream the video files usig VLC.
I googled a bit, but 1) It requires to enable the feature from LAN connection (which I didn’t) and 2) You can only stream or copy the files from LAN. So it doesn’t work for me for now. I need to setup my another laptop in Tokyo as Remote-Desktop controlable, then launch an FTP server to download the MPEG(VOB) files from here. I’ll probably do it when I’m getting back to Japan next time, the beginning of April.
Also, it doesn’t stream the HD content because of the annoying Copy Once flag. Streaming over the net gives me 480x320 at most with 3Mbps, so switching the recording to SD doesn’t matter. (SD programming will stop in 2010 in Japan)
